Dehydration is a common problem that the elderly face, in part because they may have a limited ability to get food and water on their own. Someone who lives in a nursing home, for instance, may count on the caretakers to bring them what they need.
Even in its mildest forms, dehydration can lead to all sorts of issues like headaches or dizziness. Since it’s so dangerous for an elderly person to fall, you can imagine how even these minor issues could turn very serious in a hurry. But, if dehydration is ignored or not treated quickly, it can also lead to even more serious ramifications.
What else can happen?
Every case is unique, of course, but there are some serious complications that arise from untreated dehydration. Medical experts note that it can lead to:
- Urinary tract infections
- Kidney stones
- Heatstroke
- Kidney failure
- A drop in blood pressure
- Hypovolemic shock
- Seizures
Some of these, such as hypovolemic shock, are potentially fatal. This is why you can never overlook the early warning signs. If someone is being neglected or even abused by being intentionally denied the water that they need, it is nothing to take lightly and it can cause serious injuries or even death.
What can you do?
If you believe that your elderly parent has been suffering from dehydration or has been abused or neglected in any other way, then it’s time to start looking into all of your legal options. The elderly may have trouble understanding what to do on their own, so it is often up to others to advocate for them on their behalf.
