Long-term care facilities have very specific duties that they must complete for the residents. These individuals pay to be cared for in a certain way at the facility. The level of care depends on the ability of the resident and how much self-care they can manage. Unfortunately, there are sometimes residents in these facilities that don’t get the care they need. This can be the result of negligence.
One troubling thing about nursing home negligence is that the residents suffer and the facility still receives its pay. There is no reason for these elderly individuals to pay for services they aren’t getting. This atrocity has to be stopped in its tracks so that the elderly individuals no longer face harm.
Two primary issues that can come from negligence in long-term care facilities include dehydration and malnutrition. Both of these can have a negative impact on the residents’ health. Both conditions cause the person to not get what they need to support their body. This can arise from facility workers who are unwilling to monitor the fluid intake and food consumption for the residents. They aren’t watching for signs of not eating or drinking enough, such as sunken eyes, weight loss and lethargy.
Negligence in nursing homes can also happen when workers don’t help with personal care, such as hygiene practices and toileting. It can mean the person doesn’t have help getting dressed or with moving around. All of these can make life unbearable. However, some residents don’t want to cause problems, so they don’t speak up. This makes it even more difficult to spot. By being watchful of what’s going on, you might be able to help your loved one advocate for their needs and rights.
