Spotting signs of malnutrition in a nursing home setting

by | Jul 22, 2025 | Elder Abuse

When an elderly loved one resides in a nursing home, proper nutrition is crucial to their health and overall well-being. Malnutrition can be a sign that your loved one isn’t receiving proper care. It can result from neglect, poor care or even abuse.

If you’re concerned about a relative, knowing the signs of malnutrition is a good place to start.

Physical signs of malnutrition

Some signs of malnutrition are easily noticeable. These may include sudden weight loss, dry skin, hair thinning or frequent fatigue. Elderly people who are malnourished may also experience confusion, dizziness or weakness. If your relative appears noticeably frail or has difficulty healing from minor injuries, nutrition may be a contributing factor.

Behavioral concerns

Sometimes, the issue is less visible but still serious. A loved one may stop participating in activities, become withdrawn or show signs of depression. If they report being hungry or mention that meals are skipped or unappetizing, this may point to larger problems. You can also take note of the environment. Is food left untouched? Do staff appear overwhelmed or inattentive? These are possible warning signs.

Legal protections under California law

California law requires nursing homes to meet strict standards of care. This includes providing adequate food and hydration. If a resident suffers harm due to malnutrition, it may be considered neglect under the Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act. Facilities can be held accountable for failing to provide proper care. In cases where a resident is seriously harmed, civil claims or regulatory investigations may follow.

Your elderly relatives deserve to be treated with dignity. If a nursing home has fallen short, you may want to look into your legal options.
